Tigers Jaw’s The Gypsy b/w Jimmy Piersall (Alternate Version) 7” sits beyond the band’s regular rotation of dark tunes. Available in black vinyl, the two-track album originally for singles subscription members is now accessible to the public. While perhaps not nearly enough for fans hungry for a full-length follow-up to the band’s 2010 effort, this release is definitely a pleasant treat.
“Gypsy” is a summery tune with dizzying melodies and a hopping bass-line. The steady rhythm juxtaposed with brash vocals creates an oddly successful harmony, and an epic lo-fi solo ends the track in a blaze of glory. The alternate version of “Jimmy Piersall” is a country-western-eqsue acoustic ballad with soft vocals from vocalist/pianist Brianna Collins. Each piano strike really emphasizes the beauty in the song while the acoustic guitar carries the tune along. It’s a track that’s pretty enough to end on.
